Dun dun a dahhhhhh! The Birthday Cake!

I had a great birthday.  My hubby took me out for lunch and two of my girlfriends came too.  I got flowers and jewellery.  I was definitely spoiled.  I had a million awesome birthday wishes on Facebook which made me smile.  My one friend Scott posts a song on my page every year on my birthday but this one is always my favourite.  It makes me smile to know he is thinking of me!

My one fabulous friend who shall remain faceless on this blog even came over and planted my front flower garden.  She did it wearing nicer clothes than I wear to a wedding and gave herself a blister.  Man that is a true friend!

She gave me this hanging plant.  Let's see how long I can keep it alive!
And then for what you have all been waiting for...........  Dun duna dahhhhhh!  The birthday cake.  My mommy made it for me and drove it all the way here from Davidson in the traditional cake stew pot that has no handles left and when you lift the lid give a very loud  TWANGGGGG.
When we went shopping we hid the cake in the front closet.  After the cake fiasco of 2005 when Kelsey and Olivia pulled a chair up to the counter and ate my whole birthday cake with their bare hands I will never leave it unattended again.  If anyone is eating this whole cake sans fork it will be ME!

The happy baker.
 The way the cake looks.
 The way the cake tastes.....

Olivia swiping some icing while I take a picture.  Swiper no Swiping.

Here is the secret family recipe.  Makes me think of my Grandma Bea every time I have it.  I hope I will be able to make this some day.  Just a warning it is NOT easy to make.  I have only attempted it once and failed.  My mom even admitted that she had to make the icing twice for this one.  You should only attempt this if you know what you are doing.

Feather Cake

11/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2c Pastry Flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Almost 1 cup of Milk
3 egg whites
1 teaspoon of vanilla

Cream Butter and Sugar Well.  Sift dry ingredients. Add alternately with milk.  Beat egg whites until stiff.  Fold gently into batter.

Bake at 350 in two layer cake pans

Icing
1/2 pint of whipping cream
1Tablespon Vinegar
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Pecans

Put vinegar in cream.  Let sit overnight in fridge.  Add sugar.  Slow boil until tan and thick.  Forms a sot ball when you put in cold water.  Add nuts and vanilla.

Call Corla when cake is done to come for a slice!!  Putting money in Aluminum foil and sticking in the cake is completely optional but fun for birthdays.  My mom did not put money in this cake.
