Many times I have been told, " You should write a book." Well I have just came up with the title of my first book. "Why is There a Banana in My Purse?" And other equally relevant questions....Memoires of a Mother on the Edge.
I was at the library last night being a good mom and getting books for my kids and when I pulled my wallet out of my usually neat and tidy purse (who am I kidding) there was a mystery brown goo securely attached to my wallet. Upon further investigation I found the culprit a decomposing, mushy brown half banana squished in with my casino coupon which I plan on cashing in for $10 to go get a hit of coffee, my urban ground coffee card, diaper coupons and the gift certificate for the spa Janice gave me for my birthday in June that I haven't found time to go and use.
I think I figured out what happened. Every Wednesday I take Kelsey, Carson and Ellie to a mom/ kid coffee party where they have snacks. Carson is a smart kid and maybe he figured if his mom got home later in the day and got on facebook it could be a while until his next meal so like he learned from Alvin and the Chipmunks it is always a good idea to store some food away in case you need it.
If you have another name for my first book please feel free to coment on this post. The best title will win a $10 Urban Ground Coffee Card from me!
The Rokochy/Lepines met up in Saskatoon last weekend for High School Musical on Ice and watersliding. It was so good to see everyone and Neil and Megan joined in on the fun. What could be better than 12 kids watersliding, pizza and a show? How about barfing in the hotel room. It seems wherever the Rokochy family holiday takes us that we inevitably end up with at least one kid pukin and this weekend was no exception. We don't ever expect to get a damage deposit back. I think we should have learned by now to make a reservation.... Non smoking room with a crib and could you leave us a barf bucket, mop, lysol and some extra sheets. Thanks.
Here is the gang just after the flu swept through the whole house. They were all weak and run down so I thought they might have less fight in them for a family picture. This is the first shot!
Growing up I had the great fortune to live next door to the most fabulous Turkish family. One of my best friends then and now Murad moved in next door when we were in grade six. Murad and I were in the same grade from grade one to twelve and now he has beautiful twins the same age as Olivia. His mom is one of the greatest cooks around and has always been like a second mom to me. I spent so many days and evenings next door drinking tea, learning about life, crying over boys, wishing I had less zits and more boobs. It is funny how a recipe can make you think of someone. Every time I make fatiahs I think of just how much time I spent next door. The late night trips across the lawn with a bowl of cereal looking for milk. The whole family means the world to me and sometimes life gets in the way and months pass between phone calls and visits but they are the kind of friends that are more like family and all you need to do is pick up the phone or drop in for tea and it is like no time has passed at all.
Here is the recipe for fatiahs. It is nothing like the original but I try and my kids love to help. They are so great in lunches or for weekend hockey trips, in the microwave, with ketchup, yummy.
You need a package of frozen bread dough from the CO-OP say " hi" to Stitchy!
Brown two pounds or so of hamburger. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Can of whole tomatoes. I gues you could use the diced ones but I just love squishing these ones. I squeeze most of the juice out of them and break them into a bunch of pieces. Also add green onions and green peppers chopped up. My kids hate all these things and don't even notice they are in there. I am very sneaky.
Take one of the loaves of bread dough. You want the dough to be thawed enough to slice but not squishy. I cover it with saran wrap while I am working so it doesn't get crusty.
Cut the dough into twelve equal pieces. Roll the dough on a floured countertop . The kids love this. Place the meat mixture into the center of the dough. Just a tablespoon or so. Pinch the circle so part of the triangle comes together. You are aiming for an acute triangle ( just joking) Make it a cute triangle.
Fold the side in and pinch closed. Make sure the seal is tight so no juice leaks out.
Crack an egg (or let your kids fight over whose turn it is to crack it then pick out the egg shells) brush the egg over the fatiah.
Sprinkle each one with seasame seeds.
Bake for a while at 350 (why is there even any other tempatures on the oven??) until they are golden brown.
How do they smell Kelsey?
When they come out of the oven brush them with some melted butter.
This is Kelsey's first year in hockey and he could not possibly be more thrilled. Every day he asks, "Do I have hockey today" No Kelsey only on the weekends. If Dad is at work and you are going to school there is no hockey. Such enthusiasm.
We were sitting around the kitchen table eating supper when Pat casually mentioned that his team the Penguins were going to be playing at the Bronco game. Kelsey paused and beamed with a smile but waited for us to say we were just joking. When he realized we were serious he shouted out, " We are so going to kick their butts!" I explained to him that they were not actually playing the Bronco team but another team of five year olds between the first and second periods.
What an exciting night! Those kids were reved up for their two minute shift in the spotlight. Pat told Kelsey you only have two minutes so give it all you got! And boy did he ever.
The celebrity ref Charlie Horse ! A kid favorite.
#6 in your program #1 in your heart.......Kelsey
Kelsey's little buddy.
Pat made my sew his name on his jersey before the game. So everyone would know who he was.
The coach's son scoring the game's only goal. The penguins win it 1-0!! What a celebration.
What is the best thing to do after a great game of hockey?? Come home and cuddle. These two were so cute having a sleepover after the big game. This picture is going to come out some day in a wedding slideshow I can just feel it.
In the middle of all of the excitement at the Bronco game I was also going back and forth to the curling rink to watch the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. I was proudly telling everyone that the McIvor girls were my neighbors in Davidson. The two rinks had to curl eachother in the semi-finals for a place in the final game. Rene's rink ended up placing second which made us all so proud! Her sisters and mom and Dad were there to cheer her on. They had all their little ones at the rink all week which made me feel so much better that I am not the only that brings my kids along with me. They were all so cute and well behaved.
Happy Birthday to our little guy Carson. Our big guy turned three this month. It was about time for him to give up his doodoo (soother) as you can see it wasn't doing wonders for his teeth. He only liked one kind of soother and the company actually stopped making it so he had to make do with the ones he already had. We were down to the last three soothers one yummy doodoo and two yucky doodoos. He would always say I want my yummy doodoo! On his birthday we decided to tell him we threw them all in the garbage. The next week on garbage day he begged us to ask the garbage man for his doodoo back and when the truck pulled away he asked if we could phone the dump and get it back for him. A bittersweet birthday. Onto breaking his other bad habits like sticking money in his brother's wii and putting money down the register. Pat has to get this kid a savings account to put his money in!
When you are five years old and live in Swift Current there aren't too many things better than the Broncos! So, when you get a chance to go to the Timbit Hockey Jamboree for initiation hockey, play street hockey with Broncos, have hot chocolate and timbits, get a medal and a jersey it is pretty much the highlight of the year. Kelsey made sure he brushed his teeth extra good so he could say "HHHHHHi Cody Eakin!" I think the look on his face pretty much says it all!
